Europe is facing what emergency authorities warn could be the worst wildfire season on record. Tragic news has emerged from the Greek island of Crete, where two firefighters have lost their lives while battling raging blazes to protect local villages near a popular northern tourist destination.
As gale-force winds and searing heatwave conditions sweep across the Mediterranean, emergency services in Greece are scrambling resources to multiple tourist hotspots, including Paros and Lesbos, where peak summer travel has been severely disrupted.
Over in South-West France, an estimated 60,000 residents and holidaymakers were briefly permitted to return to their homes in the Gironde region. However, active fire fronts remain a severe threat on the outskirts of Bordeaux, keeping emergency services on high alert. Meanwhile, the UK Emergency Coordination Authority warns of challenging days ahead, with over half of England now officially declared in drought.
