Fifth Amendment invoked at US Senate hearing on COVID-19 origins | 9 News
Former Chief Medical Advisor to the US President, Dr Anthony Fauci, has refused to answer questions from US lawmakers during a Senate hearing investigating the origins of COVID-19. Invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times, Dr Fauci declined to testify on the federal government’s handling of the pandemic and ongoing investigations into the coronavirus origins.
Reporting live from Washington D.C., Nine News correspondent Lauren Tomasi details the dramatic proceedings. Dr Fauci declared that the committee chairman leading the investigation possessed an “obsession” with prosecuting him, prompting his decision to remain silent on legal advice.
The congressional inquiry continues to explore competing theories regarding how COVID-19 first emerged. While many global health scientists maintain that SARS-CoV-2 evolved naturally from animals to humans, lawmakers continue to scrutinize the lab-leak theory involving a research facility in Wuhan, China.
