Tensions flare in the South China Sea as ASEAN meeting ends
The end of this year’s ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in Manila has been overshadowed by a number of incidents in the South China Sea.
The Philippine Coast Guard has accused its Chinese counterpart of firing water cannons at government ships near the disputed Scarborough Shoal for a second day in a row.
The two incidents followed another confrontation earlier in the week. Manila said one of its sailors was struck by a baton by Chinese Coast Guard personnel.
The latest confrontation was reported just hours after both Beijing and Manila said they were still committed to diplomacy during the ASEAN meeting.
