Indians in Australia pour out to support ‘Cockroach’ youth protests
‘Keeps me up at night’: Indians in Australia gathered to protest in solidarity with the tens of thousands of ‘Cockroach’ youth protesters in Delhi, India, who have faced violent confrontation with the police while marching to the country’s parliament to demand the resignation of the country’s education minister and broader reforms.
The youth protesters describe themselves as a part of the Cockroach Janta Party — a movement that erupted after India’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant compared some unemployed young people to “cockroaches” and “parasites” during a hearing on another issue.
Demonstrations gained momentum after the alleged leaks of the country’s fiercely competitive college entrance exams and the now-terminated hunger strike by Indian climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.
During the protests, police have fired tear gas and charged at demonstrators with batons, marking one of the most serious confrontations in a youth-led campaign against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
