World divided over Palestinian statehood recognition
The United States will soon be the only permanent member of the UN Security Council not to recognise an independent Palestinian state. A decision by Australia, Britain, Canada and Portugal means 151 of the UN’s 193 member states now recognise an independent Palestinian state. France is set to follow suit.
The Trump administration says the move will be meaningless and counter-productive.
Earlier, UK Prime Minster Keir Starmer said recognition is the only way to “keep alive the possibility of peace and a two-state solution” and denied it was rewarding Hamas, saying: “Our call for a genuine two-state solution is the exact opposite of their hateful vision. So we are clear – this solution is not a reward for Hamas, because it means Hamas can have no future”.
