Wong meets Iranian foreign minister, warns actions ‘crossed a line’
Foreign Minister Penny Wong has met with her Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, a month after Iran’s ambassador to Australia, Ahmad Sadeghi, was expelled from the country.
Australian security agencies declared in August that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps had directed two antisemitic attacks in Australia, including the firebombing of the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne, in December last year.
Wong told SBS News it was important to tell Araghchi “face-to-face” that Iran’s actions “crossed a line” and were utterly unacceptable” to Australia and its people.
