Indonesia stepping up efforts to fight wildfires as smoke haze impacts the region

Indonesia says it is ramping up efforts to contain the country’s out-of-control wildfires, as frustration over the government’s response grows around the region.

Jakarta says it has deployed 54,000 personnel to fight fires that have been burning in multiple parts of the country since August.

Independent monitoring group Nusantara Atlas says at least 895,000 hectares of land have burned so far this year.

Thick smoke haze has blanketed Indonesia and surrounding countries, pushing air quality to unhealthy levels.
