UN spokesperson: Escalators ‘checked and re-checked’ ahead of Trump’s visit
Following the 2025 technical mishap that forced US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to walk up a faulty escalator at the United Nations building in New York, a reporter asked UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric if the escalator had been “triple-checked” this year ahead of Trump’s visit to avoid a similar situation.
Dujarric confirmed UN escalators and teleprompters had been checked and arranged “to facilitate the US delegation … without a hitch”.
Trump has previously demanded the person responsible for the escalator incident be arrested, saying: “These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter”.
Following further investigation, the UN said Trump’s own videographer likely triggered the built-in safety mechanism that brought the escalator to an abrupt halt.
