World leaders call for control of frontier artificial intelligence models

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has played a “central role” in crafting a statement alongside a broad coalition of international leaders that calls for control of frontier artificial intelligence models.

That statement was publicly released on Tuesday ahead of the United Nations General Assembly leaders’ week.

The 22 signatories to the statement include the leaders of Norway, Finland, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Iceland, the European Union, Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates.

The statement proposes an international institution to set standards and provide oversight to “convene states when capability thresholds are crossed”.

However, it remains unclear whether this can influence major AI negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House later this week.
