Ukraine’s ousted defence minister calls for wartime elections

Ukraine’s recently sacked defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov is calling for wartime elections, warning the country is facing a crisis of governance and lashing out at corruption.

It’s the first time a major Ukrainian political figure has made such a demand since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Ukrainian law prevents presidential elections from being held whilst the country is under martial law.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is yet to respond to the call from his former ally, but has previously said elections can only be held once Ukraine has security guarantees from partners and a ceasefire in place.

The domestic political drama has played out as the two countries remain locked in an escalating duel of long-range aerial attacks.

On Tuesday, at least 10 people were killed in a Russian missile strike on a village in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region.
