Trump’s lavish White House welcome for Xi

US President Donald Trump says he and Xi Jinping held a “great meeting” in the White House, as the Chinese leader continues his three-day visit to the United States.

Xi was welcomed to Washington DC with a striking level of pomp and pageantry, drawing criticism that the US is treating its adversaries better than its allies.

It’s Xi’s first formal state visit to the US capital since 2015, when he was hosted by former president Barack Obama.

The two leaders will hold discussions on security, competition and artificial intelligence.

Despite the positive optics at the White House, demonstrators took to the streets of Washington DC to decry Beijing’s human rights record.

Pro-Tibet activists marched from the Chinese embassy to the Capitol Building, while outside the White House, pro-democracy protesters defaced a photo of President Xi with a pair of scissors.

Members of the Uyghur minority group rallied against China’s new ethnic unity law, accusing Beijing of genocide in the eastern Xinjiang region.
