Trump announces agreement for ‘complete disarmament’ of Hamas while analysts remain cautious

US President Donald Trump has announced an agreement for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas, calling it a critical step toward a new Palestinian government in Gaza.

Hamas have reportedly agreed to the deal. In return, Israel will withdraw in phases.

Specific details about what the deal will look like are slim, with neither Israel nor Hamas releasing public statements following Trump’s announcement.

Hamas’ approval of the plan triggers a 14-day period in which the sides will finalise a timeline for implementing each step.

However, an Israeli official has since stated to Israeli media that the proposal doesn’t meet the demands of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

An undisclosed US official also told Reuters there was “close coordination with Israel” and that they were “very confident” Israel would adhere to the terms, but said Israel was “sceptical” that Hamas would disarm.

If Israel does not agree to the deal, “Trump will be disappointed”, the news agency reported.
