Albanese doesn’t rule out copyright law changes in AI race | ABC NEWS

Australia is developing national standards for AI and data centres, setting out safety, environmental and industrial rules, which the prime minister said he hoped to legislate early next year.

Meanwhile, Mr Albanese hasn’t ruled out changing copyright laws to attract AI investment, saying Australia needs to be “forward leaning” if it’s to help shape the development of the increasingly powerful technology.

The government is consulting on changes to Australia’s copyright laws that tech giants including Anthropic and OpenAI have identified as a sticking point over plans to invest here.

They fear their unauthorised use of copyrighted material to create, or “train”, their AI models is breaking the law.
