A violent criminal serving an extraordinarily long sentence transitioned to female while incarcerated in a men’s prison in Western Australia. The State Administrative Tribunal initially approved the inmate’s transfer to a women’s facility due to safety concerns and physical violence, but government lawyers successfully appealed the decision in the Supreme Court. The inmate, known only as SD, must now be recognised as female in all internal Department of Justice systems but has no right to choose where she is confined, and is preparing to take her case to the Equal Opportunity Commission.
