In a world tracked by satellites, smartphones and constant connectivity, it feels like nowhere on Earth is truly untouched. But that’s not true.
In The Dive, news.com.au’s in-depth deep dive video series, we investigate the last uncontacted tribes on Earth — Indigenous communities who still live completely outside the modern world.
They have never used money, driven cars, or accessed the internet. Hidden deep within jungles, islands and mountain forests, these groups actively avoid sustained contact because, for many, isolation is the only way to survive.
This episode explains what defines an uncontacted tribe, how many remain worldwide in 2026, and where they are found. In South America’s Amazon Basin — home to more than 90 per cent of uncontacted peoples — groups including the Moxihatetema, Korubo, Piripkura and Mashco-Piro continue to live beyond sustained contact in Brazil and Peru.
In the Indian Ocean, the Sentinelese of North Sentinel Island are among the most isolated people on Earth. India enforces a strict exclusion zone around the island after past contact attempts ended in violence and disease.
Uncontacted groups also remain across the Pacific. In Papua New Guinea and Indonesia’s West Papua, tribes such as the Yaifo, Korowai, Kombai and Kolufo live in some of the most inaccessible terrain on the planet.
But their isolation is under threat. Deforestation, mining, illegal logging, disease and reckless outside contact are closing in fast.
This episode of The Dive explores why protecting these communities — and their right to remain isolated — has never been more urgent.
