Sydney Airport experienced severe disruptions with tens of thousands of passengers stranded due to air traffic control staff shortages. Fifty-six Qantas flights were delayed and four cancelled, with 25 Jetstar and 20 Virgin services also impacted, causing delays of up to three hours for some domestic routes. The crisis comes just one week after a near-miss incident on the runway at Mascot, where two planes almost collided, with fatigue issues in the control tower now being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
