New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based artist Richard Lewer has won the $100,000 Archibald Prize for his portrait of fellow artist and friend, Iluwanti Ken.
Lewer visited the Pitjantjatjara elder’s community for a week to paint her portrait, learning about her lifestyle and artistic practice.
He told the ABC he plans to build an backyard art studio with his prize money.
