NT chief minister defends child protection laws at Garma Festival
The Northern Territory’s Chief Minister, Lia Finocchiaro, has stared down critics of her government’s contentious child protection policies at this year’s Garma Festival.
Sue-Anne Hunter, the Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People, appeared to make a veiled critique of the Northern Territory government over its child protection overhaul during her address at the event.
“We can’t talk about connection to culture without talking about connection to family,” she said.
“It is our right, and it is the right of the child, and no government can change that.”
