The Victorian government has announced $350 million in hospital upgrades for Melbourne’s western suburbs, including $249 million for maternity services at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Sunshine Hospital, and $95 million to expand Werribee Mercy Hospital’s emergency department. The spending comes seven months before the state election, with political analysts suggesting Labor is trying to protect traditionally safe seats in the west after a significant swing against them at last year’s Werribee by-election. The region faces additional pressure with public school teachers planning rolling strikes in May and June over pay disputes.
