Iranian protester released on bail following death penalty threat

Iranian protester Erfan Soltani has been released on bail days after the United States warned he was facing execution – a claim Tehran has denied.

According to his lawyer, the 26-year-old was freed over the weekend after a bail payment of around $12,600.

Mr Soltani was arrested during nationwide protests earlier this year for propaganda against the state and national security offences.

Iran’s judiciary says his case is still under investigation and does not carry the death penalty.
