Garma Festival draws thousands to northeast Arnhem Land

Thousands of people have flocked to the Top End for the annual Garma Festival, one of Australia’s largest Indigenous gatherings.

Organisers of this year’s festival, which takes place in northeast Arnhem Land, say the four-day event is an opportunity to improve understanding of the leadership and culture of Aboriginal communities.

International guests and federal politicians are among thousands gathering at the event, considered an important forum for Indigenous policy and cultural exchange.

Lia Finocchiaro has delivered her first address at the event as chief minister of the NT amid criticism over her government’s contentious child protection policies.

The federal Opposition has also used the festival to announce some key Indigenous affairs policy objectives.
