A 60-year-old man has been arrested after up to 100 shots were fired in Sydney’s inner west, with at least one person shot and 16 people injured, according to police.
Police say the shots were fired “indiscriminately” at passing vehicles, including police vehicles.
Streets were locked down amid a major police operation at Croydon Park on Sunday evening, following reports of multiple gunshots striking people and cars.
Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry said, “there could have been anywhere between 50 and 100 shots (that) had been discharged at the time.”
“He was shooting … from within the premises, out of a window. (That) is what we believe,” Superintendent Parry said.
He told the media shots were fired “indiscriminately at passing vehicles including police vehicles”.
The huge police operation was brought to a close shortly after midnight on Monday, following the 60-year-old’s arrest.
The man, who has not been charged, was taken to hospital under police guard for injuries sustained during his arrest.
He was arrested after officers entered a unit above a business on Georges River Rd at about 9.30pm.
