Detention, working holidays and partner visas: Tony Burke responds to immigration policy criticism

Immigration Minister Tony Burke said he can’t quarantine any sector of the economy from the impacts of the government’s immigration shake-up during an interview with SBS’s Anna Henderson.

The federal government announced on Thursday changes to Australia’s migration system, with visa-hoppers, overstayers, students, and backpackers targeted in the crackdown.

Burke responded to criticisms of the policy changes, including likening some of the policies to the hardline approach taken by US President Donald Trump.

CLARIFICATION: Since recording this interview the minister’s office has clarified he misspoke and master’s degrees will not be exempt from the family visa restrictions. (4:05)
