Carney claps back at Trump’s comments over Canada-EU alliance
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has seemingly responded to comments made by United States President Donald Trump that a proposal to make Canada an associate member of the European Union was “laughable”, with Carney saying the alliance would make it “a more effective partner” with the US.
A day earlier, Trump told reporters that he would “put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things” if he thought the proposed alliance was “a hostile act”.
Speaking at a press conference with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Carney said: “Nobody is going to tell us what language we speak, no one is going to dictate our culture, or with whom we can strike agreements internationally.”
