Barnaby Joyce credits One Nation’s rising popularity to the global right-wing populism movement
Barnaby Joyce, former Nationals MP and now One Nation MP, has said he believes One Nation’s rising popularity is part of “a phenomenon across the world”, likening it to the MAGA movement in the US and the rise of the UK’s right-wing populist Reform Party under leader Nigel Farage.
Joyce told ABC’s 7.30 “Australia’s late to the party” because of the country’s compulsory voting model, adding it’s “stickier here, but now it’s happening”.
Recent polling has revealed support for One Nation is at an all-time high, with surveys putting support for the party between 14 and 18 per cent.
In a recent statement, Nationals leader David Littleproud, said Joyce had “chosen to turn his back on the Nationals and on his electorate” to join a party which would “never be able to achieve anything other than headlines”.
