For decades tea tree oil has been produced in northern New South Wales and South‑East Queensland with most of it exported.

But the European Union is considering tightening import regulations after a study where the oil was fed to rats.

Although tea tree oil is meant to be applied not ingested, Australian producers fear restrictions could seriously damage the industry.
