For nearly a century, thousands of perfectly aligned holes in southern Peru have baffled archaeologists.

Theories about their purpose have ranged from defence and storage to water collection.

Now, University of Sydney archaeologist Jacob Bongers believes he has solved the mystery: the mountain may have served as an ancient form of accounting.
