Iranian state media has confirmed the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed.
The announcement follows a statement from US President Donald Trump on social media, claiming Khamenei was killed in a joint US and Israeli air strike.
Khamenei ruled Iran for more than 35 years, cracking down on liberal values and promoting religious conservatism.
He strengthened Iran’s military and built a network of proxy groups in the region to counter the influence of the United States and Israel.
