What you need to know about the Cornell University case

Allegations that a student was drugged and raped by members of a Cornell University fraternity have led women in the United States and beyond to post the words “I am Jane Doe” online.
The campaign has drawn comparisons with the MeToo movement of almost a decade ago.
The former Cornell student, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit in the New York Supreme Court last month. She alleges seven current and former members of the university’s Chi Phi fraternity sexually assaulted her over several hours at their fraternity house in October 2024.
The allegations have not been tested in court, and no criminal charges were laid in 2024.
Since the lawsuit was filed, a criminal case has been reopened, and New York governor Kathy Hochul has appointed the state’s attorney general Letitia James as special prosecutor. James described it as “an active criminal investigation”.
