Wells deflects criticism over government’s handling of triple-zero outages
Communications Minister Anika Wells has called on Opposition leader Sussan Ley to apologise for claiming she was “swanning around” New York during a recent United Nations visit to promote the government’s under-16 social media ban.
Ley had previously argued Wells should have remained in Australia to handle the recent triple-zero outage.
Wells has since announced new legislation to establish a Triple Zero Custodian to continuously monitor the emergency network and manage any future crises.
The custodian was a key recommendation from a March 2024 review commissioned after an Optus outage two years ago, but the Opposition says the government has been too slow to act.
Viewers seeking support can contact Lifeline for 24-7 crisis support on 13 11 14, Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467 and Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 (for young people
aged 5 to 25).
