Western Australia is experiencing a severe brick shortage, forcing the state’s only major manufacturer, Midland Brick, to ration supplies to builders from Thursday. The state government is investing $4 million to recommission the Cardup brickworks plant, which was mothballed in 2023, with the facility expected to boost supply by 10 to 15 percent when it becomes operational in March. Builders are calling for additional measures including brick imports as the housing crisis intensifies, with new home construction having nearly doubled since the plant’s closure.
