US, Russia and Ukraine acknowledge Melania Trump for role in coordinating humanitarian ceasefire
US First Lady Melania Trump is credited with helping coordinate a temporary humanitarian ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia in southern Ukraine.
The ceasefire is expected to take effect on 27 October and remain in place until the end of a humanitarian mission to deliver food, drinking water, and medicine to the frontline and to replenish hospital supplies, according to Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets.
Lubinets told Reuters that negotiations involved direct contacts with Russia, and mediation by the United States, including a team established by US First Lady Melania Trump.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov praised Melania for helping secure the agreement.
“We welcome the efforts of the First Lady of the United States, Mrs Melania Trump, who has made a significant contribution to the coordination of the humanitarian operation in the settlement of Oleshky in the Kherson region,” Peskov said.
US President Donald Trump also complimented his wife on her role in coordinating the ceasefire.
“I think she’s done a great job. I mean, she’s into saving babies and bringing babies back home to their parents, and she’s been able to do something that’s great. She’s been working very hard on it,” Trump told reporters.
