US defence secretary Pete Hegseth attacks diversity initiatives in military
US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has told a gathering of top brass commanders that ‘fat generals’ and diversity initiatives have undermined the US military and that they should resign if they do not support his new agenda.
Addressing a room full of America’s top generals and admirals, summoned from around the world without explanation last week, Hegseth promised sweeping changes to how discrimination complaints are handled and how accusations of wrongdoing are investigated at the Pentagon.
Hegseth defended his sacking of flag officers, which include the top US general, who was Black, and the Navy’s top admiral, who was a woman.
The Australian Defence Force states diversity as a strategic goal with initiatives aimed at continuing to increase representations of women, Indigenous Australians and people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds.
