‘Unsafe, unfair, unprotected’: Australian delivery drivers get minimum wage and insurance
“Convenience shouldn’t cost a worker’s life”: Starting today, thousands of delivery drivers across Australia will be getting paid a minimum rate of $31.30 an hour and be insured for on-the-job injuries in what is being described as a “world-leading” change.
The new standards, released by the Fair Work Commission, specifically apply to employee-like workers engaged through digital on-demand delivery platforms who deliver consumables (food, beverages or liquor) or supermarket groceries. There was no minimum pay standard for gig drivers before this.
At this stage, delivery platforms like Uber Eats and DoorDash have not announced any price increases for goods and services.
