The office of Nepal’s energy minister says two people have been rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel nine days after floods hit the area.
Earlier on Friday, Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha’s office said in a statement the two workers pulled from the tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station are Sanjay Sah, a mechanical foreman, and Kabir Maharjan, a mechanical supervisor.
Mr Maharjan cannot move his hands and legs but Mr Sah’s injuries are not critical, an aide to the energy minister told Reuters news agency.
The two are being taken to a hospital in Kathmandu, he said.
The rescues come nine days after the August 26 floods, likely caused by a glacier collapse, that devastated towns and valleys in Nepal.
At least 1,259 people were killed and more than 5,000 remain missing, according to the country’s disaster management agency.
China, as of late Wednesday, said 21 people were killed and 541 were missing on the Tibet side of the border.
About 900 workers are missing from 12 hydropower projects in Nepal, with roughly 500 believed to be trapped in tunnels, according to local authorities.
