Two people have died and three others are seriously injured after a car and knife attack outside a UK synagogue, on the holiest Jewish day of the year.
Armed police rushed to Heaton Park synagogue in the northern suburbs of Manchester on Thursday morning, UK time, after a car was driven into a crowd and a security guard was allegedly attacked with a knife in what has been officially declared a “terrorist incident”.
Police have named 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie as the suspected attacker, who was shot dead at the scene.
“He is a British citizen of Syrian descent,” police said.
“Based on what we currently know, our records do not show any previous Prevent referrals relating to this individual.”
Two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s have been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism, police said.
Police said a “suspicious device” was worn by the attacker during the incident but it was deemed not “viable”.
