New British PM Andy Burnham promises ‘circuit breaker’
Andy Burnham has succeeded Keir Starmer as the United Kingdom’s prime minister, pledging to bring stability to the country’s politics while declaring his premiership will be a “circuit breaker for Britain”.
Burnham — the former mayor of Manchester — has become the UK’s seventh prime minister in a decade and has said his plan involves heavy decentralisation, even at the heart of government, pledging to work the majority of his week away from Downing Street in a so-called ‘Number 10 of the North’ in Manchester.
He also said his government will focus heavily on domestic issues — a big change from his predecessor, who was considered an effective leader on the international stage but less so at home. Experts say the change in leadership could impact the UK’s investment in defence but is unlikely to impact AUKUS.
