Trump threatens ‘violent and vicious’ response over Nigerian Christian killings
US President Donald Trump has warned he will “viciously” attack those who violently target Christians in Nigeria.
Speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, local time, Trump said no modern US administration has done more to protect persecuted Christians globally.
He then cited US airstrikes ordered on Christmas Day last year against ISIS fighters in northwest Nigeria, who he accused of slaughtering Christians “by the thousands”.
“When Christians come under attack, they (the attackers) know they’re going to be attacked violently and viciously by President Trump,” he said.
“I know it’s not a nice thing to say, but that’s the way it is.”
The president framed the protection of persecuted Christians as a defining mission of his presidency.
“It’s a mission, it’s actually a mission,” he said.
