Trump says Hamas will disarm or ‘we will disarm them’
US President Donald Trump has threatened violence against the Palestinian militant group Hamas if it does not disarm in “a reasonable period of time.”
“If they don’t disarm, we will disarm them. And it will happen quickly and perhaps violently,” he told reporters. Hamas has not publicly committed to laying down its weapons.
The fragile ceasefire appears to be holding but both sides have accused the other of violating the deal.
Hamas has now handed over eight coffins of dead hostages, leaving at least 19 presumed dead and one unaccounted for still in the Gaza Strip. Israel said it decided to restrict the number of aid trucks entering the enclave by half and delayed plans to open the southern border crossing to Egypt over the slow release of hostage bodies.
Meanwhile, re-emergent Hamas fighters have been reasserting control in Gaza by deploying hundreds of security forces in the streets and executing several people they accused of collaborating with Israel.
