As he opened the portion of the meeting attended by the press, Mr Trump was actually very kind in his description of Mr Albanese.
“It’s great to have the prime minister of Australia,” he began. “(It’s) a fantastic place, got a lot of friends over there – and this is one of them right here.”
Mr Trump gave Mr Albanese a friendly tap on the forearm before continuing.
“He’s highly respected and did very well in his election. I hear you’re very popular … today. It varies from day to day,” he said.
“It’s a great honour to have you as our friend and to have you in the United States”.
Turning to Australia, Mr Trump said: “We’ve been long term, long time allies, we’ve fought wars together and I would say there’s never been anybody better.”
