Tony Abbott on Gillard’s ‘Misogyny Speech’ | Radio National | ABC NEWS
It’s been more than 13 years since Australia’s first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, delivered her so-called misogyny speech in parliament.
The speech was in response to then-opposition leader Tony Abbott accusing her government of sexism.
Reflecting on the famous moment, Mr Abbott has described speech a “rhetorical triumph” and “a political coup” — but ultimately one that couldn’t save her leadership.
“I certainly thought she was a worthy antagonist, a very capable person,” Mr Abbott, Australia’s 28th prime minister, told Radio National Breakfast.
“She made [the speech] not about the misbehaviour of the Speaker but she made it about the alleged misogyny of our system.”
