A voluntary assisted dying (VAD) advocate has called the Northern Territory’s recently passed VAD laws “very weak” and says they will fail to help people like her late partner, who died with a rare neurodegenerative disease in 2015. On Thursday the NT parliament passed the government’s Rights of the Terminally Ill bill, which will legalise VAD in the Territory when it comes into effect. The legislation includes conditions that patients must have a 12-month prognosis and that health professionals cannot initiate conversations about VAD — a so-called gag clause.
