We know the catastrophic flooding on the Nepal-Tibet border was caused by what authorities describe as a glacial collapse. But why did the glacier collapse? And what happened to early warning systems?
Dr Ruth Gamble – the lead author of a ground-breaking book about the river systems of Tibet and the Himalayas – told ABC NEWS that climate change is likely a factor.
Reports from China’s Caixin Global say the glacial collapse involved a massive section of ice shearing off a Himalayan slope at roughly 5,000 meters above sea level.
Dr Gamble said because it fell for more than three kilometres before it hit populated areas, it would have picked up significant speed, increasing its destructive force. She says early warning systems were knocked out by the landslides, and didn’t work well enough.
