Tehran residents gathered at Enghelab Square on Wednesday (November 4) evening and burned a huge banner depicting US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance after their Republican party’s midterm elections loss.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff were also depicted on the banner.

The banner burning took place during a state-organised rally commemorating the student takeover of the US embassy in Tehran during the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Some Iranian news outlets played on the timing of the US midterms on the anniversary of the embassy seizure, when radical students cemented Iran’s toppling of the US-backed Shah by storming the embassy and holding 52 Americans hostage there for 444 days.

Iran’s government savoured the stinging rebuke delivered to Trump in the midterms, declaring voters had rejected the war launched by the US president even as Tehran remained on high alert for the possibility of renewed strikes.

But two senior Iranian sources told Reuters that while Iranian leaders welcomed the Democrats’ victory, Tehran was concerned that Trump could seek to compensate for it with a military strike, and remained on high alert.

Iran’s leaders have long regarded the United States as their main enemy, referring to it as “the Great Satan.”
