SA’s Deputy Premier speaks about the state’s Indigenous Voice to Parliament

South Australian Deputy Premier Kyam Maher said while there was still some division in parts of the community over the state’s legislated Indigenous Voice to Parliament, the SA government was still committed to Truth-telling and Treaty with First Nations Australians.

“This is about something we committed seven years ago to do in South Australia, and we will take that commitment,” Maher said.

Maher, speaking with NITV at Garma, said the first 18 months of establishing the Voice to South Australian Parliament have been about “setting up the framework”.

Maher said the process was like “building a plane as you’re flying it”.

“[You’re] having to put that infrastructure around something that had never happened in Australia before,” he said.
