Russian foreign minister questions whether Britain is ‘Great’
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said that Great Britain should simply be called “Britain”.
“Great Britain is the only example of a country which calls itself ‘great’,” Lavrov told reporters as he spoke about colonialism following comments on Greenland.
Lavrov said another example of a country which called itself “great” was the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, led by Muammar Gaddafi, which is now known as Libya.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is usually called “Velikobritaniya” in Russian, translating to “Great Britain”.
