Record boost in New Zealand’s Kakapo numbers, but H5N1 bird flu threat looms | The World | ABC NEWS


In 1995, the population of the kākāpō, the world’s heaviest parrot, was just 51 after nearly going extinct at the start of the 20th century.

But there is good news – that figure has now surpassed 300 for the first time in 75 years.

That’s after 90 chicks were added to the population in New Zealand.

Conservation biologist Andrew Digby told The World’s Girish Sawlani there’s been success in recovery efforts to boost the number of the flightless bird.
