Reserve Bank chief economist Sarah Hunter says “there weren’t too many surprises” in June quarter inflation numbers that came in slightly below the RBA’s most recent forecasts. Market pricing shows traders interpreted this result as all but ruling out any chance of an interest rate rise at the RBA’s board meeting on August 10-11. However, Ms Hunter says domestic inflation pressures remain and it is “critical” that inflation expectations remain contained. She also acknowledged that the US Federal Reserve’s moves towards a probable rate rise in September may put additional pressure on the Reserve Bank to respond. Barrenjoey chief economist Jo Masters, who moderated Ms Hunter’s ‘fireside chat’, and ABC business editor Michael Janda, who also attended and put questions to the RBA’s chief economist, analyse what was said and what it means for the interest rate outlook.
