So far, conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz has opposed banning the party, which must be requested by either house of parliament or the government, and then examined by the Constitutional Court.
The long-standing refusal of Germany’s mainstream parties, including Merz’s Christian Democrats (CDU), to work and form a coalition with the AfD, common in Germany’s state and national parliaments, could now be tested by the results of 44% of the vote for the AfD.
The outcome of the election underlines the deep unpopularity of Chancellor Merz’s ruling coalition and also triggered alarm among Germany’s neighbors, France and Poland, and elsewhere.
