Pope Leo urges cooperation and safeguards for AI
Pope Leo has rejected suggestions that warnings about artificial intelligence being a potential threat to humanity were “fake news”, and is calling for governments and technology leaders to work together on safeguards.
The comments appear to be a response to United States President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly where Trump said the US “totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control for artificial intelligence”.
When speaking to reporters after his trip to France, Pope Leo said: “To simply say, ‘oh it’s not going to happen’ and close our eyes to it, I think is probably not the most responsible way to go about that.”
The pontiff also mentioned the CEO of computing technology manufacturers NVIDIA, Jensen Huang, and questioned his opposition to government regulation even as the company develops guardrails intended to prevent AI systems from causing harm.
